Facebook is rolling out its dedicated “News Tab” with professionally produced content as part of its efforts to promote journalism and shed its reputation as a platform for misinformation.
The social media giant bean rolling out the new feature on Friday in some parts of the United States
The news area will be different from user´s normal home news feeds and include blogs from news organizations, with Facebook depending on both human social robot and algorithmic “personalization.”
Tagged Facebook News, the new tab “gives people more option and control over the stories they want to see, and the ability to explore a broader range of their news interests, directly within the app,” said a Facebook statement.
The initiative is with Mark Zuckerberg´s call to promote “quality journalism” and help readers separate professional content from viral prank or joke.
This week, Mark indicated to a “big announcement” related news and journalism and specified the new feature would focus on “high quality news, not just social content.”
Facebook is likely to pay some of the news organizations that will take part to the News Tab but yet to reveal full details.
The social media and network has engaging with some 200 news organizations including the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post and many others.
Facebook said it would begin an initial test turn out which would “display local original reporting by coming up local publications from the largest major metro areas across the country, beginning with New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and other cities.”
